Sliema Wanderers F.C. Nursery was founded by the late Guzi Fava . Prior the founding the Nursery, Guzi was very active in other sporting activities in the Sliema District. He was the organiser of a competition under the name Zghazagh Haddiema Nsara.
In the year 1982, a meeting was held between the Sliema Wanderers F.C. Committee, under the Presidency of Dr. George Bonello Dupuis and Guzi asked for permission to organize a Youth Football Nursery. The permission was granted by the Sliema Wanderers F.C. Committee, the first football nursery in Malta was formed under the name of Sliema Wanderers F.C. Youth Nursery. The first meeting was held at Sliema Wanderers and a committee consisting of the following people was formed: Chairman Guzi Fava, Secretary, Sandra Sammut, Treasurer, Edgar Izzo and Tony Formosa who was Sliema Wanderers F.C. Coach was an advisor in coaching. Other helping in coaching were Charles Micallef, Frans Sammut and Anthony Turner.
In season 1983, through the hard work of the Chairman, Dr. Alex Schiberras Trigona, Minister of Foreign Affairs formed the Assocazzjoni Sportiva Tigne and Sliema Wanderers Nursery was given premises and the use of the Tigne Football Ground.
In the first seasons from its foundation, two teams were formed, namely that of the fourteen years old and the youth team.
The Sliema Wanderers F.C. Nursery, being the first nursery to be founded on the Island , was also a model for other Nurseries that followed.
In the following seasons a large number of parents wanted their children to join. For this reason, new age groups were formed commencing from the age of eight up to the youth team. This was quite a problem for the Nursery Committee as qualified coaches were few, but with the help of Fr. Hilary Tagliaferro, who was the Director of Sports Education, coaches were provided and success didn't take too long as the good organisation in the running of the Nursery attracted many more youngsters to join.
Following the example of the Sliema Wanderers F.C. Nursery, many other nurseries were formed in the following seasons and friendly festivals were being held. The Sliema Nursery was the first one to organise these friendly festivals not only locally but it was also the first Nursery to compete in football competitions overseas, such as in Italy, England, Sweden, Wales, Bulgaria and Egypt. These are a few of the Countries in which the Nursery participated over the years.
The Nursery can be proud with the success achieved by its players. In season 1987/88 Jonathan Magri Overend and in 1989/90 Ivan Calleja were awarded Malta Youth Players of the Year. In season 1988/89 Sandro Zammit Fava and 1997/98 Michael Mifsud were awarded the most promising players. The last youth who was awarded the Malta Youth player was Josef Mifsud in season 2001/02. Another Nursery player, namely Noel Turner, has also won the Malta Footballer of the year twice.
Proof of the lavish amount of honours won by the Sliema Wanderers F.C. Nursery, can be seen in the showcases which adorn the Sliema Wanderers F.C. premises in Tower Road , Sliema.
On 29 th November 1991 , the beloved Founder Chairman Guzi Fava passed away with the misfortune of not being the official inauguration of the first Astro Artificial Turf Pitch in Malta .
In January 1992, Sliema Wanderers F.C. Committee elected Victor Scerri, ex Sliema Wanderers F.C. and Malta goalkeeper, Sliema Wanderers F.C. Coach in the seventies and National Coach, as the new Chairman. Victor kept the Nursery running on the same lines of Guzi Fava.
Under the Chairmanship of Victor Scerri , a new committee was formed as follows: Secretary, Yvonne Debono, Treasurer Adrian Ellul Soler, Members, Rita Buhagiar, Doris Frendo, Alfred Frendo, with Leli Fabri as the Head Coach. More coaches had to be engaged as the number of boys was on the increase.
The Nursery is proud not only of having won so many honours but also of having won the Under 14 Championships on four consecutive seasons under coach Twanny Rocco.
When Sliema F.C. decided to form Sliema Wanderers F.C. Company Ltd, a new committee was formed under a Chief Executive, Reginald Tellus but this system was short lived as the following seasons Victor Scerri was re-elected as Chairman.
A new chapter for the Nursery had to be opened, due to the fact that the premises of Tigne, including the Turf Pitch had to be vacated to give to the Tigne Area Development project.
On the 20 th December 2001 , the Nursery moved its premises to the National Swimming pool Complex with the facility offered temporarily being adequate. Although the Nursery had to undergo some restrictions, its aim remains the same, that of giving the best of our boys.
In these last few seasons, since our move to Tal-Qroqq, it was decided that for the benefit and improvement of the boys, each group will consist of not more that 25 boys per group. For this reasons, the Committee including the Head Coach, after scrutinizing each age group, informed some boys to take up another sport. These boys were given a free release.
The training sessions have been increased. It is only the 6 to 10 years old who train twice a week, the other groups have more frequent training. As the main football pitch is made of sand, instead of organising Festivals and Tournaments, the Nursery invites others Nurseries, every month, to participate with all age groups. All our age groups have participated in festivals/tournaments to which our Nursery was invited. During this season 2003/04 our Nursery participated in 45 festivals and have registered good results.
Carnival Tournament
The greatest achievement since we moved to our premises is the annual Carnival Tournament held for the last two seasons at St. Aloysius Artificial Turf for the three age groups, Categories under 10 - 12 - 13. This tournament was sponsored by General soft Drinks Co, Sixt Rent A Car and Daiken.
With the continuous introduction of several Nursery products in the senior team, the future for Sliema Wanderers F.C. is a bright one.
This information was gathered and produced by Mr. Victor Scerri on June 2004 .
